Lizard Point, Cornwall. For Marie-france.

Marie-france reminded me that the geology of Ouessant (Ushant in English), an island off the far west coast of Brittany, is the same as that of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. The geology of this area is very mixed. This shot is of Lizard Point. It may or may not have the same geology as Ouessant.
Marie-france, does it look like this? If not, I'll try and get more photos next time I go there (possibly next month) from a different area geologically but still on The Lizard!. Although forgive me if I don't go to Coverack, they'll still be cleaning up after the flood!

Interesting and complex too! It's a long time since I read up on it, so I have forgotten much of the detail. I should look up the geology of Ouessant as well, I think!

The Lizard Peninsula is made of Serpentine

It is just about workable by hand with some effort. I still have some basic stuff I carved.

I used to have a few small pieces of handcrafted serpentine, too, Pam. I must ask my mum if she has them anywhere! I also used to know a chap who had a tiny workshop where he made this stuff but that was in the 1970s and it's long gone. A pity; it was fascinating watching him work!

I always associate Brittany with large rounded boulders of pink granite, Andy, but the geology of Ushant certainly sounds much wilder than that. I love the way the lichens in the splash zone colour the craggy rocks.
I hope your Mum's garden is not washed away. I don't know how far away she lives from Coverack. I guess the road into the village will be closed when you come to Cornwall. We were promised lots of rain, but woke up this morning to about 3 cm.

Hi Amelia,
I too know the rounded pink granite rocks of the north coast of Brittany. As I mentioned to Gudrun, I will have a quick look at the geology of Ushant after my ipernity visit this morning (a class cancelled, free time!! Yippee!).
Thank you for your concern; my parents live inland, about as far from the coast as you can be in Cornwall and on higher ground, far from a stream course. Their area is known though as 'Sinking City' due to the frequency of uncharted mine-shafts suddenly opening up!!!
