Die Schot ist die Leine, die das Segel im gewünschten Winkel zum Wind hält. Eine Deutung besagt, dass bei einem Sturm Mast und Schot Sollbruchstellen darstellten, die brechen bzw. reißen sollten, bevor noch größerer Schaden entstehen konnte. Daher führte man früher neben den Ersatzschoten auch einen Ersatzmast mit.
