It was erected in the context of the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula with the function of a mosque, till the 12th century. In the context of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, in the 12th century it was transformed into a Christian temple. The current configuration of the temple dates from a constructive campaign of the 16th century. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Of the early Islamic temple are witness four Arabic-style doors and the mirabe, the place that indicates the direction of Mecca in the mosques.
