Oregon and California Wildflowers
Folder: Native Flora and Fauna
Silvery Lupine
Because Crater Lake is at such a high elevation the wildflowers were just starting to bloom when we were there the middle of June. These Lupine were photographed along the road as we left the park and headed for the Oregon Lava Lands. I am not at all certain of the identification but am posting them as Silvery Lupine, Lupinus argenteus.
Rydberg's Penstemon
We saw quite a few wildflowers at Lava Lands in Oregon including this Penstemon which I've identified as Rydberg's Penstemon, photographed on our hike up Lava Butte, an old cinder cone.
Sulfur Buckwheat
The lava in which this Sulfur Buckwheat is growing is clearly seen in the photo, taken at Lava Butte in Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon.
Hot-rock Penstemon
Penstemon deustus, the Hot-rock Penstemon prefers volcanic soils which are evident in this photo taken at Lava Butte in Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Oregon.
Rydberg's Penstemon
These are some of the wildflowers we found growing in the lava flows around Cinder Butte in Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon. You can see a bit of the lava cinders in this photo of Rydberg's Penstemon and it is even more evident in the other photos. One wildflower, the Hot-rock Penstemon grows only in lava flows and so its range is very limited.
Spreading Phlox
These Spreading Phlox were photographed in Crater Lake National Park where the earliest spring wildflowers were just beginning to bloom after snow melt.

Siskiyou Iris
Photographed in the Siskiyou Mountains of northern California, this small Iris grows only in a few counties in that state and Oregon.

Desert Sweet Pea
I was in southern California recently on business. I didn't have much time for sightseeing or photographs, but did manage to get out for an early morning walk and an evening walk. This was taken on the morning walk, but I had no means of identifying it and must thank Fizgig for the ID.

Kellogg's Lily
Kellogg's Lily, Lilium kelloggii, is endemic to two counties in northern California and and two in southern Oregon. It can grow to be over six feet tall (2 meters). These were not that tall and were photographed along a forest service road in northern California. You can see the legs of a Crab Spider at the bottom of the flower but I was more interested in the flower than in him.
