Common Spotted Orchid
This, I believe, Is the Common Spotted Orchid, Dactylorhiza fuchsii. We saw many of these on Black Mountain when we hiked there, but this photo was taken at Castle Espie, a nature reserve on the shores of Strangford Lough. We visited there last week Friday.
Belfast from Black Mountain
Last week we hiked some of the trails at Divis and Black Mountains above Belfast. This was one of the views from the trail with the Mourne Mountains visible in the distance. Black Mountain is in the Belfast Hills west of the city. It is 1275 feet (389 m) high, and a favorite walking spot.
Og Lake Sunset
Backpacking to Mount Assiniboine we camped our second night at Og Lake. We arrived and set up camp in the afternoon and later watched the sunset. It was a beautiful spot but the mosquitoes were very bad. In the photo, several other campers' tents are visible on the lower right and Mount Assiniboine looms above the other peaks on the right..
Mount Assiniboine
Mount Assiniboine is known as the "Matterhorn of the Rockies." It is in British Columbia west of the city of Banff and Banff National Park. This photo was taken at sunset from the shores of Lake Og where we camped a night on our backpacking excursion to Assiniboine.
Cedar Point, Grand Canyon
In May we visited the Grand Canyon and spent three days backpacking into the canyon and camping there. This was taken from the South Kaibab Trail, the trail we took down into the canyon. We would go much further down, first hiking down to the plateau, and then after setting up camp at Indian Gardens on the plateau, hiked down to the Colorado River.
Mule Train on the South Kaibab Trail
When we were backpacking in the Grand Canyon recently we met this mule train on the South Kaibab trail. The mule trains carry tourists and supplies down to the Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon. My daughter and my wife are visible in the photo waiting for the mule train to pass.
Grey Abbey
Grey Abbey is an ancient ecclesiastical site in the town of Greyabbey, County Down, Northern Ireland. The abbey was founded in the 12th Century and disbanded in the 16th. It is on land now owned by the Montgomery family on the east side of Strangford Lough. We explored the Ards Peninsula and the area of Strangford Lough yesterday and enjoy the fine weather and seeing again many places we had visited over the years we lived in Northern Ireland.
