Hotel shuttle bus, back of the hotel

Photo in the window of the Arcade Hotel, taken in the 1920s. The bus was used to pick up people from the train station. This once-prosperous lumber town was really buzzing then and there are many old hotels from that period. All are now either vacant or rooms are rented as SRO ("single room occupancy," meaning long term rental for one person, usually semi-transient men).

Original Arcade Hotel

(Pardon the selfie.) Photo was taken in the 1920s. This building has been vacant for a very long time. In the late '50s, my grandmother took me here for lunch and it was still a functioning hotel. I thought it was very fancy! I even remember what I ate: a hot turkey sandwich. That's white bread (of course) topped with two slices of turkey and slathered in turkey gravy. Probably a Coke to drink.

Wikipedia: "Leatherneck is a military slang term for a member of the United States Marine Corps, or of the British Royal Marines. It is generally believed to originate in the wearing of a leather "stock" or collar around the neck, which kept the posture erect."

This is beside Highway 97 in the tiny town of Midland, Oregon. Population 265. I don't know how long it's been here, who built this or why, only that it's nuts and very entertaining. Edit 4/26: I just noticed something at the location. To the side of the castle is what looks like a BMX-style or go-cart track that was abandoned in the planning - or after failure. The end of it trails off to line up with the castle, possibly intended to lead under the wider opening you see above. (But, wouldn't an obstacle like that be dangerous?) I'm leaning toward dirt bike track because of something that looks like a start gate at one end of the oval. Also, perhaps it's banked at the opposite curve, but not sure. (Yes, the more I look at it, it's not for go-carts, but for bicycles.) So, maybe the whole thing was supposed to be a bike park for kids or a roadside attraction, maybe connected with the motel on the other side. AA290 Funny.

Knotty pine office

Knotty pine - so 1950s! The first home I remember was entirely knotty pine inside. The cabiney look was all the rage.
