I especially like the image in the PiP though - it's fantastic - I love the rust and the detail and especially the shape! Straight out of the realm of science fiction. It's a little like a giant Dalek (perhaps a MkI version) :-))

Now I became interested to find out more! Burning saw dust? Why? Can't one even use it to heat something? Or burn to get energy? And what is done with saw dust today?

There you go, Mr. Researcher! Very little sawdust is burned these days, it is now a valuable resource.

What I could not find is the reason why this was done in the first place. However, I guess there was a danger that the wood dust piles could ignite spontaneously and start burning uncontrollably.

There were two reasons. They produced copious amounts of smoke, ruining the air quality around them. (I remember the strong smell!) Second, they did start fires even though there were spark-screens on top. There would be grass fires around the burners, or an ember would start a fire on someone's house. In this case, the entire mill was burned down twice. I don't know if it was the sawdust burner that did it, but it certainly could have been. Mill fires happened with some regularity in the US and Canada.
