Crater Lake Klamath Regional

Crater Lake Klamath Regional
The name was changed a few years ago to add Crater Lake, because people actually recognize it. That has not increased commercial air traffic. Without good air service, the city really has no hope of attracting industries that aren't already here.

I doubt there's enough demand in the area to have service to both Medford and Klamath, and aren't there more people within an easy drive of Medford?

There's a big problem for the whole population of Klamath Co and all other southeastern counties: iced highways over the mountains on the way to Medford. Not everyone has a 4-WD vehicle with a deer/antelope/elk guard. I think any isolated town without commercial air service is a no-growth town. Even when local folks can tolerate an icy, and occasional white-out, trip to Medford, business people trying to get to SF/LA during the winter aren't going to. It's also been a serious problem with our medical services. The best doctors don't stay past getting their student loans forgiven and give lack of air service as one of the main reasons. (I suspect the culture is another one.) There's a constant turnover at the hospital and clinics.

Oh... said with a very long pause.

I'm guessing this is exasperated by the changes in railroading. Back 50 years when passenger rail travel was still something, Klamath was probably more important. With passenger train travel being replaced by I-5 travel, Klamath becomes forgotten and thus doesn't develop the other needed stuff (air travel). Lack of access is seldom good for keeping a culture alive.

KF has always been isolated, sort of a derided hick-town. I very vaguely remember how outraged the business people were that all significant traffic would be diverted through the Rogue Valley. Most tourists coming from the south to Crater Lake use I-5 instead of 97 through KF - a more direct route. Oh well, the locals aren't welcoming to outsiders, anyway, so I don't feel sorry for them.
