Once in awhile I take a picture of this...

Once in awhile I take a picture of this...
...so I can remember what country I live in. Also, because it amuses me how enormous this flag is in front of a small strip mall. I'll bet the one in front of the Pentagon isn't bigger than this.

Tanja - Loughcrew, kiiti, Buelipix, Smiley Derleth and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Yes, you were. I never saw as many American flags as I did when I moved back here, but that's because I lived the prior 46 years in an urban region where there are more complex thoughts.

Flag me to Oregon !

This huge flag is at least much more photogenic that the sad muppet with the false wig.

They just wantto catch your eye, I know two gas stations on Hwy 401 near London, Ontario, with bigger Canadian flags than this. One of them is seriously bigger.

Anyway, we like to wave our flag, because it's pretty.

As for your president, he still has a long way to go to be the worst president of my lifetime. I grant that he's taking quite a shot at the title, but he's not there yet.

But we survived them all. In particular we survived that night in 1963 when we all thought that the next morning we would wake up dead.

You have a better flag and a better national anthem!

The Yam's primary quality is intentional cruelty toward all humanity - except for select dictators. He meets criteria as worst president, as well as horrible human being. He's a mob boss.

As a citizen of a country the US tried to annex by force (Madison thought Upper Canada would be easy pickings) I perhaps have a different perspective on this matter, Diane. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump tried the same thing, but so far he hasn't. But I suspect he craves our peameal bacon technology.

Your anthem has far superior lyrics to either the English or French versions of ours. The music could use a revamp, though. Some day an American singer is going to die.trying to reach those high notes.

Haha! I always expect someone to have a stroke while singing it at the opening of a baseball game. Lyrics? Bombs bursting in air...yeah, nice.

John, the Idiot is way too disorganized and dumb to pull of an invasion of anything. Plus, right now, he's getting daily smack-downs from his staff, his generals and about 3/4 of the world. However, I expect some new, self-inflicted scandal to try deflecting from his manure pile of legal and political woes. Never has a US public figure been more loathed by so many...not even Nixon. Anyway, just have Justin yell BOO! at the border.

To invade Canada he'd first have to find it on a map, eh? I believe Trudeau should challenge him to a boxing match.

There's a video of the fight on YouTube. An impressive performance.

I cannot sing either set of words to our anthem without being a hypocrite.

In English I'd have to sing "God keep our land glorious and free", while in French I'd have to sing "Car ton bras sait porter l'épée il sait porter la Croix" (my interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount leads me to conclude that Christians shouldn't sing that, either).

Oh, what a good idea! Wait a minute, that means we'd have to look at the Yam in just boxing shorts. Arrggghhh! I'll look for that video. "...resulting in a bloodied nose for the [Tory] senator." Another good idea!

Maybe you should just hum the anthem. I can't even think of the last time I sang our anthem or said the Pledge of Allegiance. Forty years ago? In what setting? Don't have a clue.

There are no maps in the White House and the generals won't give him any, so don't worry.

All that flag waving leaves a stale taste... I guess it's because I'm German and we aren't comfortable with it because of our past - and because the ones waving our flag now are usually people who give me the creeps....

I understand what you mean. Our flag was hijacked by the ultra-right several decades ago, as a political weapon, so most people who aren't in that category have no desire to wave it around. That kind of "in your face" patriotism makes me sick. Then, there's the issue of the Confederate flag, which is all about racism. Ugh, all of this... it will never end!

Interesting comments Diane! I'm not a fan of flag waving either, but like you I do sometimes take a picture because it's photogenic ;-)) Same here with the ultra right brigade. Thankfully they are greatly outnumbered.

Thank you, Rosa, there is so much symbolism involved that it's hard to be objective about them as a photo subject!
