The Ship Ashore

The Ship Ashore
Abandoned about four years ago. In the 1950s and early 60s this was a restaurant. It was a nostalgic stop for me, because my grandmother took me out to dinner here a few times. I was her buddy, very young and easily impressed by eating dinner in a ship!

The restaurant was closed and the Ship Ashore became a souvenir shop and museum, but "...lawyers from the city shut the place down because the ship was not ADA accessible." From: www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/1972

My assumption is that there was no way to make it accessible due to its narrow interior. (More info, next photo.)

I don't know, but I suppose someone bought it as salvage and hauled it here for his restaurant. See more information in the next photo.

I thought it was Fitzcarraldo for a moment. I would like to think its days of use, some kind of use, are not over. Quite a sight.

Haha - great analogy, Smiley! I suppose it will just be left there to become a gigantic rust repository. I would kind of like that, actually! I'll go back in a few years for more photos - lol!

I suggest to level the Mount Everest (not ada accessible) and prohibit Mozart (not deaf accessible)

The law probably applies more strictly to businesses than mountains! But, I understand what you mean. Merci, Sylvain!

Hold your memories close Diane...

Amazing series.

I am a huge ADA advocate.. but I also advocate just as strongly for common sense. Clearly none was used in that decision.

So am I, but I also feel that there should be some sort of allowance made for places like this. After all, it's not McDonald's or a corporate resort. In the end, though, I think the owner was tired of the expense of his ongoing legal fees. Thank you for your thoughts on this, Pam.
