She has, and she thought this was hilarious! By the way, she's very tall for her age (9), now. I think she must be part Danish. Danke!

I hope she's not playing kittly-benders.

I don't think so, but I can't be sure what kittly benders are. I did find kitty benders, however. "This was a game involving running across the ice without breaking it. The prize was that you didn't die." (http://tinyurl.com/z7ygqmt - which you already know). So, if she was, she lived! My dad used to play this game in his father's old car in the '30s. I doubt his father knew about.

I have absolutely no memory of HDT's kitty benders.

Well, that's interesting, I found "Kittly-benders" by chance, reading my 1910 edition of Walden published in Boston. That's how it is in there: "Let us not play at kittly-benders.There is a solid bottom everywhere." it's about four pages from the end of the book." On looking it up most references are to "kitty benders", with the same meaning, or, when citing Thoreau "kittlybenders" without the hyphen. I shall write a thesis on it immediately. Whatever, it's one of those words you don't forget, once heard!

Yes, very interesting...and a thesis is absolutely in order. Do you suppose there was a very old typo error when citing that phrase, then it got carried to the present without anyone checking? After all, kittly is an invented word and kitty isn't.

Yes, I did think typo error, but I like kittly over kitty, which sounds like the maltreatment of small cats. My thesis is progressing.
