Field of dreams, hallowed realms, the glory of games gone or still to come, the kind of magic that haunts these places...empty football fields, stadiums, cricket pitches...some of our best moments, the light fading, the strike, the arc of the ball, the catch...

"As a boy you play baseball all summer long, all day long and into the evening, so long as there is still light enough to be able to see the ball. Then as an adult, you watch it and follow it for the rest of your life, still like a child."

Philip Roth.

Lovely passage. It's a pity, most of them no longer play anything out of doors, unless you count sitting on a bench hunched over a screen. Childhood looks boring to me, now, without the sheer bliss of lying on the grass and breathing in all of that sweetness, climbing trees or staring at clouds. Very little time is spent alone with thoughts. There are many baseball fields in this small town, all of them empty, all summer long, unless there is an organized Little League game in the above park. My grandchildren are kept busy with adult-organized activities. It's awful.

And watching lightning bugs -- catching some to be released later ... with my cousins - whoever had the most won!
And the prize -- bragging rights until the next time.

Aww, that's a great image, Peggy! We don't have lightning bugs and I've only seed a few in my life. I don't remember where.
