My mother in her prom dress, 1942

My mother in her prom dress, 1942
After she bought the dress from the Montgomery-Ward catalog, quite an expense for her parents, the Senior Prom was cancelled because of strict WWII gas rationing.

This was in a tiny berg called Interior, South Dakota. Before moving into town for a couple of years, the family lived on a cattle ranch about 10 miles away. Mom grew up on the ranch and daydreamed about moving to a big city. This is truly in the middle of nowhere.

Quite a statement of independence considering the remoteness of that area. I think the popularity of the Badlands has made the area somewhat less remote (there's a KOA outside Interior (awkward to say!)).

Lol! Yes, it is, and I've never actually said that. Oh, I don't know, it's pretty darned remote. Interior has actually added some population since 1990 (67). In 2013 it was 100, according to Wikipedia. Those are probably the people who run the KOA camp and the new-ish Cedar Pass Lodge facility. (I worked in the old one the summer after high school.) No grocery store, no hardware store. But, still has two bars and two churches! The area holds a lot of magic, at least in my memory.

By the way, Don, is there anywhere you haven't been?!

Don Barrett (aka DBs… club has replied to Diane Putnam club
Look whose talking! I haven't been to Africa or Asia (except Turkey).

There's still plenty I want to explore, even in your own neighborhood.

OK, well I'm relieved to know you haven't been EVERYWHERE! Yes, there is always someplace to explore, even where you live.

... as seen in: "Archive Airings Group - SPECIAL TIMES / CUSTOMS" ... this is true American History; grass-roots history, both photo and story ...

We all (of a certain generation) have stories from our parents of the 30's and 40's, so many of them representative of the era; stories and family history that will be lost unless we share with our children and grandchildren.

Not too long ago, colleges and universities were doing a lot of "oral history" recordings, but it seems that trend has fallen by the wayside ... perhaps deemed unimportant compared to blogging and social media.
