Okie Joe's

Okie Joe's
"Okie" is a negative, or sometimes affectionate, nickname for someone from Oklahoma. In the old Oregon logging days (1920s-60s) there were quite a few people from Oklahoma who came to work in the woods. People from Arkansas, too, who were of course Arkies. This was probably a bar, but has been vacant for a long time.

On the West Coast, I think the term is mainly pejorative and during the Depression years was applied sometimes indiscriminately to anyone moving into the area in dire circumstances. Growing up in Oklahoma and moving to California when I was 19, I heard it clearly as a term of condescension or contempt, and this was in the 60s.
