Quelle: Wikipedia

➽ 4 December: St. Barbara ❀ ❀ ❀ Depending on the region and tradition are used cherry, apple, birch, hazel, chestnut, plum, elderberry, hawthorn or forsythia branches. They should bloom until Christmas Eve and bring Christmas decorations in the cold and gloomy winter time. The custom goes back to the legend of Saint Barbara, according to this she got stuck on the way to the prison with her garb clinging to a branch. She put the broken branch in a vessel with water and it flourished on the very day on which she was sentenced to death.
After regional folk belief the blossoming of the Barborky brings good luck in the coming year. Partly it's the custom that the young girls assign the name of a suitor to any branch. The branch which blooms first is intended to indicate to the future groom. Source: Wikipedia
