A corner of Chester

Monochrome

A corner of Chester

Chester, UK, the old Roman fortified town has many charms. Here is just one of them.

Ahoy there.

Just at the side of the Göta Kanal in Gothenburg, Sweden lies this memorial to the age of sail, albeit on land. In an case, making for an attractive photo in this contre-jour misty setting. Enjoy

Inner Dubrovnik

The back streets can get pretty hectic here within the old city walls of Dubrovnik. At least one can still get a manicure easy enough :)

An old mill in Oldham

23 Mar 2018 43 68 842
Fence, stairs and grid shadows as seen on one of our local mills. A nostalgic view for all those that have laboured in such places. HFF to all my viewers. PiP for alternative colour version.

Delph

A Wintry scene on one of my local walks in the Saddleworth village of Delph. The trees and reflections really drew me to this, the fence -well that adds too.

Honfleur, a pictorial view

26 Apr 2018 8 6 318
A first look at this most picturesque port, characterised by its houses with slate-covered frontages, and painted many times by artists. This inner-harbour view, is by no means its best but still, it s quite wonderful to see and stroll around. An old town, displayed here in an old monochrome manner!

Old fort lighthouse, Corfu

18 May 2015 2 339
Atop the old fortress in Corfu Town stands this almost forlorn lighthouse overlooking the sea on three sides and the old town on the other. Its age eludes me as I cannot find any reference to that. This photo amazingly misses out the throngs of tourist who have, like me, climbed the heights to get here.

Winter of Oldham, March 2016

04 Mar 2016 7 7 425
A walk from my home, this only about 10 minutes away can be a splendid experience, even in Winter. Here we see the results of our first real snows of this 2015/16 Winter and a day after it was almost all gone.

The Bow Valley and Mt Fairview

16 May 2016 6 4 438
A rather artistic view taken well above lake Louise, almost at the Lake of St Agnes. Part of the Banff National Park. A view to linger over and simply enjoy.

Tatra Mountains vista

13 Jun 2018 18 25 475
Taken from a horse-drawn wagon on its way through the Rybi Potok Valley and the famous Morskie Oko lake in the Tatra National Park, Poland. As can be seen low cloud obscured a lot of the mountain skyline but this peak stood out for me, just for a few seconds. Enjoy PiP

St. Mary's Basilica from the Cloth Hall, Krakow

10 Jun 2018 9 12 422
Here in the old main square of Krakow, one of largest medieval town squares in Europe, are a multitude of things to photograph. As a tourist though, almost every architectural gem is marred by hoards of fellow tourist and so here am I, at around 06.45, to avoid all that. Enjoy with me a tribute in the art form of yesteryear. Three Red Doors and a Fence

25 Jul 2018 49 76 672
A wander around the city centre of Manchester can lead to all sorts of places. Here we see what at first sight looks like an old mill of sorts but the flower vase and curtains gives the game away. Yes, these are certainly modern converted apartments with views looking on Manchester's China Town. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb Best viewed full screen.

Loreley

06 Sep 2015 2 349
The siren, Loreley (Lorelei), said to lure sailors on the very narrowest section of the Rhein onto the rocks is seen here sitting at the end of the spit of land on this part of the river called The Loreley. A rather seductive view here but modesty forbade me to shoot from other angles :) Enjoy

West Coast ride with the 'Lancashire Fusilier'

05 Sep 2016 6 6 329
This is one of the special 'West Coast' excursions travelling from the Highlands coastal town of Mallaig to Fort William. This is being pulled backwards by the Lancashire Fusilier (LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 5407). Funny enough the loco is based on the East Lancashire Railway at Bury just a few miles from my home! Snapped about a mile out of Mallaig.

The lovely Loch Moidart

10 Sep 2016 5 6 307
Taking the beautiful 'Silver walk path' from Castle Tioram north and west along this loch reveals beautiful views like this. A pleasure to explore and photograph.

A walk along Trow Gill

23 Mar 2017 14 11 486
Just north of the Yorkshire village of Settle, sits the smaller village of 'Clapham'. Amongst other delights it is the starting point of a magic trail called the 'Reginald Farrer' nature trail. The trail leads to another great attraction 'Ingleborough Cave' , a subject for more photography and chat. At its far end lies this gully lined by old dry stone walls and inhabited by sheep and walkers. Just behind me it is very steep indeed leading further to another famous spot, a pot-hole called 'Gaping Gill'. Not much to look at from the top but a cavers delight once the 100m decent has been made by pulley ropes and ladders. - A rather tranquil view here, displayed in mono to give it that ageless look that has abound here for millennium. More info-Gaping Gill: www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/visit-the-dales/discover-the-dales/caves-and-potholes/gaping-gill Trail and cave: www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/yorkshire-dales/clapham (See also the photo three up from here.) pip

Circular fence

12 Jun 2018 39 65 522
Taken in the beautiful Polish mountain resort of Zakopane. I spotted this fence and shadows whist listening to a lecture on rock formations by our guide. Being the person I am, I was more interested in capturing this for the next HFF despite withering (but maybe jealous) looks from other members of our party! I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb

Dune Fence 2

25 Jun 2011 68 95 654
Another dune fence from me here, again done at Formby on the Merseyside coast. I have tried to capture the timeless feeling that these scenes provoke as the sun goes down. Footprints and shadows make it for me. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb Best viewed full screen. See PiP for my other Dune Fence
