Linz – Hauptplatz

17 Oct 2024 10 14 239
A first look at the Austrian city of Linz. The Main Square forms the centre of Linz and is one of the largest enclosed squares in Austria. The 20 metre high white marble column, completed in 1723 is dedicated to the Holy trinity in gratitude for having survived many disasters’ and a protection against fire, war and plague. We are beset by many baroque buildings and a fine cathedral and so an inner city walk from the Danube beckons as well as a tram ride up to the Pöstlingberg Kirche. Of course this wonderful square demands time for a photo or two both from my DSLR and phone. See PiP for closer view of the column. Enjoy the day.

Along the Danube

16 Oct 2024 14 19 221
We are approaching the Austrian city of Linz here as we cruise the beautiful Wachau Valley. Blue skies, orange roofs and an autumnal tree all go together to make rather a nice picture for me. Enjoy the day.

A Derbyshire sunset

08 Mar 2025 16 18 360
As the sun quickly sets at our holiday cottage in Chapel-en-le-Frith I am delighted to capture this scene. We are looking NW towards the Chapel Milton railway viaduct here . As can be seen, this is sheep country. Enjoy the day.

Vienna ~ Parliament Building.

18 Oct 2024 9 12 202
An almost fish-eye panoramic view of this very impressive building here in the heart of Vienna. The start of wonderful walking tour for us. “The Austrian Parliament Building in Vienna, opened in 1883, is the meeting place of the two houses of the Austrian Parliament. The building is located on the Ringstraße in the first district, Innere Stadt, near Hofburg Palace and the Palace of Justice.” Wikipedia See PiP for alternative view Best full screen.

A trip on the lake

07 Apr 2025 11 15 282
A look at one of my local lakes here. We are at Hollingworth Lake, Rochdale, on a most wonderful blue sky day. An opportunistic shot with this Row and Stand up Paddleboard that along with its ripple makes a nice panoramic view as we walk the circuit around this popular place. Best full screen.

Vienna: The Hofburg

18 Oct 2024 7 13 125
No visit to Vienna is complete without taking a look at its famous buildings. Here we see the Hofburg or should I say a part of it. "The Hofburg is the former principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty in Austria. Located in the center of Vienna, it was built in the 13th century by Ottokar II of Bohemia and expanded several times afterwards. It also served as the imperial winter residence, as Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence." Wikipedia PiP: The Prince Eugene Monument: The main monument to this military genius, who served three Habsburg emperors, sits on Heldenplatz square. It is a bronze equestrian statue on a giant plinth .

Newborough forest from Llanddwyn Island

12 Apr 2025 12 15 193
Another look at Llanddwyn Bay from this wonderful little Island. We are taking a very wide view looking North with a backdrop of the mountain range of Snowdonia (Eryri). We also see the narrow tidal sandy Tombolo that allows us to get here without getting our feet too wet. The lasts photo shows us a closer look of the Tombolo and the big beach itself. Enjoy full screen.

Vienna Prater Rieserad

19 Oct 2024 4 3 71
Near the entrance of the Prater park showing the historic big wheel. Those of us of a certain age will remember this from the icon 1939 film 'The third man'. As we rode in one of those big cabins I could not but hum the 'Harry Lime' theme tune. Enjoy full screen.

Gorey, Jersey

09 Jun 2025 10 11 75
Gorey s described as a relaxed fishing village with its pastel coloured cottages and alfresco restaurants, all overlooked by the medieval battlements of Mont Orgueil castle. PiP We were to walk north along the seashore from here to its neighbour St Catherine. The castle was first referred to as 'Mont Orgeuil' in an ordnance survey made in 1462, when the castle was under French occupation in the Late Middle Ages.  The castle was the seat of royal authority on Jersey throughout the medieval period and served as the main fortress on the Island until the construction of Elizabeth Castle in 1594 at St Helier.

St Brelade's Bay, Jersey

08 Jun 2025 9 13 102
A short visit to this small part of southern Jersey shows us one of the many magnificent beaches of the Island. A great place for safe sunbathing with the family or simply a nice walk with golden sand in our toes. We are looking west here and if not for the outcrop of land we might even see the Islands capital St Helier. The resort also has a most wonderful short promenade and historic church. The PiP shows the opposite direction.

Smardale Gill Viaduct

24 Jul 2025 17 21 243
A fantastic climax to this Smardale railway walk here with the viaduct. Our path has come from the right here and will take us well beyond the end of the river we see in the valley bottom then back up to the dismantled railway line and back over the viaduct before another mile or two back to our car. Built in 1861 and designed by Sir Thomas Bouch for the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway. Built by Mr Wrigg and was wide enough for a double track but never carried more than one single line. It is 90ft (27m) high and has 14 arches of 30ft span and a total length of 553ft (170m). The line was closed in 1962 and stood disused until 1992 when it was turned into a linear walk and bicycle path. See www.edenviaducts.org.uk/smardale-gill-viaduct Enjoy full screen

At home on the Broads.

07 Sep 2025 12 11 63
A holiday to the Norfolk Broads is quite different from the holidays we usually make. We are actually staying in an apartment just minutes away from here near Wroxam. It is quit usual to see cruise boats and yachts as we walk on the paths that line some of the adjoining rivers to the many small broads. We are walking alongside the River Bure here. The first PiP shows the view from our apartment window. “The Norfolk Broads (often just called the Broads) are a network of rivers and lakes (called broads) located mainly in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk in eastern England. They’re a national park and protected wetland area, famous for: • Rivers & Broads: About 200 km (125 miles) of navigable waterways formed from medieval peat diggings that later flooded. • Wildlife: A haven for rare birds, fish, and plants. Species like the bittern, swallowtail butterfly, and otters thrive there. • Boating: The area is very popular for holidays, especially with hire boats, yachts, and canoes. • Scenery: Open water, marshland, reed beds, windmills, and picturesque villages. The main rivers are the Bure, Yare, Waveney, Ant, and Thurne, which connect to various broads (lakes). Towns like Wroxham (often called the "capital of the Broads") and Horning are popular hubs.” ChatGPT Have a good day.

Ravenstone/Ashway Tunnel pool before its plunge do…

. Two photos here from this spot (see last photo), looking both ways. This shows Alderman Hill in the background before the water descends through a series of weirs eventually emptying into Dovestones reservoir. The previous photo shows the chute itself See this marvellous account of a walk through the tunnel: www.28dayslater.co.uk/threads/ravenstones-ashway-tunnel-november-2010.55485 PiPs Enjoy full screen.
