Dunskey Castle
A striking view of this magnificent ancient ruin. It is hard to believe that it was once a bustling hive of activity. It is picturesquely perched on a rocky outcrop jutting out into the Irish Sea and I must admit that it really comes into its own at sunsets. (When I was not here!)

Dunskey Castle is a ruined, 12th century tower house or castle, near Port Patrick on the Rhins of Galloway, Scotland. "The massive towerhouse was built in the mid-16th century for the Adairs of Kinhilt - the same family that owned the Castle of St John in Stranraer - and the long wing to the north was added in the 1620's. By 1700 the whole building was derelict.The defensive ditch on the landward side is all that survives of an earlier Adair Castle. First recorded in the 14th century, this castle was destroyed around 1500 by the McCullochs of Myrton and Cardoness."

I assume that this is in Ireland and not Scotland, Herb. What is the history behind this castle?

Hi Amelia, good to see you again. I presume you did not catch my description that I have just updated here (I had forgotten to hit the save button). So you will see that it is indeed Scotland. It is in fact looking over the Irish Sea though towards Norther Ireland just 22 miles west of here. Some history for you too.

Thanks Daniela. The more I read this description, the more confused I get with how many years it was actually occupied for. In any case I am happy you like it. The townspeople of the nearby Port Patrick used to run to the Baron of this castle for protection and shelter when their port was being attacked.
