It is an icon written as it is supposed by a Syrian monk in the 12th century (the presence of Syrian monks in the Spoletina Valley is attested in this period) and initially venerated in the little church of S. Damiano, to be then (1265) transferred to the basilica of S. Chiara, when the Poor Clares took up residence there. It measures 210×130 and is painted on rough canvas glued on walnut wood.
