Cattedrale

The Cathedral of Matera (1230/1270) stands on an artificial embankment, in the area of Civita, so as to overlook the city, imposing itself as a reference point for the village and for those who admire it. Dedicated to the Madonna della Bruna and Sant'Eustachio, Patron Saints, it is decorated with architectural elements that make it one of the most interesting examples of Apulian Romanesque style. Above the main portal, in a niche, you can see the statue of Our Lady of the Brown, while at the sides, in addition to those of St. Peter, on the right, and St. Paul, on the left, you can admire the statue of St. Eustace. The Romanesque rose window is also of great importance, with the theme of the wheel of fortune and the bell tower with its square base is also unusual. Moving to the side elevation, attention falls on the two richly decorated doors: one called the "door of the square", anticipated by a staircase, the other known as the "door of the lions", for the presence of two statues on the sides that represent, precisely, two lions.
Entering the Cathedral, the contrast with the external style is evident. Nothing has remained in its original state, except for a few important frescoes and the beautiful medieval capitals of the 10 columns, very worked and different from each other, the rest has been completely altered over the centuries
That's why I don't have any inside pictures. I can't stand it.
