Green heron (Butorides virescens)
My dog & I were sitting under an oak tree on a hot day, when this green heron flew to a nearby tree and started posing.

Thanks, Andy. I frequently see this bird and its mate sitting in a tree on the other side of the pond. It was a rare treat to see it so near to me.

A super shot Ronald. I have never seen a green heron before, nor a heron sitting in a tree! Nice markings and I love his 'do'. What a wonderful find.

Thanks a lot, Carol. The green heron is found in the eastern USA and in all of Central America. We also have a great blue heron that is almost identical to the gray heron of Europe. Somewhere (Google+ maybe) I posted a photo of this bird on a windy day with his head feathers blowing toward his nose.
