Granville Island ist eine kleine Halbinsel sowie ein Einkaufs- und Kulturviertel in der kanadischen Stadt Vancouver. Sie liegt im Meeresarm False Creek unter dem südlichen Ende der Granville Street Bridge. Granville Island entstand 1915 durch Landgewinnung, indem die Rinne zwischen zwei flachen Sandbänken aufgefüllt wurde. Die Halbinsel war einst ein Industriegebiet, das ab den 1950er Jahren mehr und mehr zerfiel und schließlich in den 1970er Jahren neuen Nutzungen zugeführt wurde. Auf der Halbinsel befinden sich ein Flohmarkt, eine Marina, die Emily Carr University of Art and Design (benannt nach der gleichnamigen Künstlerin), ein Museum für Modelleisenbahnen, mehrere Theater und Einkaufsstraßen. Diese sind um den einzigen noch bestehenden Industriebetrieb gruppiert, einer Zementfabrik. Seit der Umwandlung der Industriebrache haben sich auf Granville Island auch zahlreiche Kunsthandwerkbetriebe niedergelassen, darunter eine Glashütte, eine Druckerei, Geigenbauer, Schuhmacher, Juweliere und Töpfer. Außerdem findet hier jede Woche ein Bauernmarkt statt. 1984 wurde auf der Halbinsel auch eine Brauerei eröffnet, die Granville Island Brewing Co., die heute aber hauptsächlich in Kelowna produziert. Granville Island is a peninsula and shopping district in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Granville Island Brewing Co. is also the name of a beer company which originated on Granville Island in 1984, but whose main base of operations was moved to Kelowna, British Columbia some time later. In 2009 it was purchased by Molson's Brewery and continues to brew small batches of its varieties at the Granville Island brewing original site, and offers beer tasting and tours of their brewing facilities. Ocean Concrete is the longest-established tenant on the island, having set up shop there in 1917. HFF - enjoy Es gibt 2 Bären dort oben: Grinder Grinder was found in 2001 in Invermere, BC. He was wandering alone on a logging road, dehydrated, thin, weak and weighing only 4.5 kg. His mother was never found so we’ll probably never know why he was alone. Grinder is outgoing and high-spirited. And he has established himself as the dominant bear despite his smaller size. If you see Grinder and Coola play fighting, you can bet he started it. Coola In 2001, Coola was found orphaned on a highway near Bella Coola, BC. His mother had been killed by a truck and, of her three cubs, Coola was the only one to survive. Coola is an easygoing bear who’s content to let Grinder take the lead in new discoveries. He can usually be found submerged up to his neck in the large pond, carefully feeling around for his underwater 'bath toys' - a log, large bone and favourite rock. Der Nitobe Memorial Garden ist ein japanischer Garten auf dem Gelände der University of British Columbia in den University Endowment Lands, einem gemeindefreien Gebiet unmittelbar westlich der kanadischen Stadt Vancouver. Er wird vom UBC Botanical Garden verwaltet, der ebenfalls auf dem Universitätsgelände liegt, aber räumlich getrennt ist. Benannt ist der Garten nach Nitobe Inazō. The Nitobe Memorial Garden is a 2½ acre (one hectare) traditional Japanese garden located at the University of British Columbia, just outside the city limits of Vancouver, Canada. It is part of the UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research. One of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America, it honours Japanese author, educator, diplomat, and politician Nitobe Inazō (1862–1933), who died in Victoria, British Columbia (now the sister city of Nitobe's home town Morioka), and whose goal was "to become a bridge across the Pacific" . The garden has been the subject of more than fifteen years' study by a UBC professor, who believes that its construction hides a number of impressive features, including references to Japanese philosophy and mythology, shadow bridges visible only at certain times of year, and positioning of a lantern that is filled with light at the exact date and time of Nitobe's death each year. MacMillan Space Centre in einen Gebäudekomplex untergebracht und das größte städtische Museum des Landes. 01/50 - Das 50-Bilder-Projekt Sechs gewaltige Industriesilos auf Granville Island in Vancouver, Kanada, wurden vom brasilianischen Graffiti-Künstlerduo Os Gemeos wunderbar in sechs farbenfrohe Riesen verwandelt. Octavio und Gustavo Pandolfo, die Zwillingsbrüder hinter Os Gemeos, widmeten ungefähr einen Monat ihrer Zeit, um dieses erstaunliche Stück im Rahmen der Vancouver Biennale zu schaffen. Das Wandbild ist auch Teil des laufenden Kunstprojekts von Os Gemeos mit dem Titel „Giants“, dessen typische gelbe Riesenfiguren ihre Spuren in Städten auf der ganzen Welt hinterlassen. Da jedoch jedes Silo 23 Meter hoch ist und das Wandgemälde eine Gesamtfläche von 7.200 Quadratmetern einnimmt, ist dieses Stück bei weitem das größte in ihrer Sammlung und ihr erster Ausflug in die Dreidimensionalität Wandbildformat.
