I left early for my Sunday morning shop as I had 4 shops to visit today. I strolled over to Morrisons,Home Bargains and Heron before cutting through the ginnle to the Town Hall square. I arrived at 10:50 just at the right time. In the next 5 or 6 minutes the square started filling up with people, some alone and some in groups. There was lots of chatter as we stood in the rain until the sound of a cannon brought silence, after 2 minutes the cannon fired again and everybody dispersed. What was this strange ritual about?. It is Remembrance Sunday here the nearest Sunday to the 11th November. The cannon fires at the 11 hour of course and most of the country pretty much comes to a standstill. Just a quiet couple of moments to remember those who have fallen in battle. It was good to see so many young people paying their respects as well as us wrinklies.
The official ceremony is held at the cenotaph but small groups like this one gather in places around the town.
With everything on the move again I finished my shopping in Wilko's and walked the few yard to the bus stop and home into the dry.
