"Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" (Calvin Carter - James "Pookie" Hudson) was recorded by The Spaniels (James "Pookie" Hudson, Gerald Gregory, Ernest Warren, Opal Courtney and Willie Jackson) in 1953 and peaked at number five on the R&B and number twenty-four on the pop charts. The Spaniels were one of the first acts to appear on the Chicago based Vee-Jay Records. "Pookie" Hudson was cousins with Josephine Baker and "Fats" Waller.
In 1954 The McGuire Sisters (Phyllis, Dorothy and Christine) took "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" to number seven on Billboard. This is from their album "By Request". Phyllis was closely associated with the mob and portrayed as such in several books and movies.
