Skagafjörður Heritage Museum

Skagafjörður Heritage Museum
The Skagafjörður Heritage Museum is a centre for conservation and research on local history and cultural heritage in the Skagafjörður district. It's exhibitions are located at the Minjahús (The Heritage House) in Sauðárkrókur and the Glaumbær museum grounds. The Minjahús houses a streetscape exhibition depicting "original" workshops: a carpenter's, a blacksmith's and a watchmaker's. At Glaumbær are three historical buildings, an old turf building, Áshús and Gilsstofa.

The turf building houses an exhibition depicting everyday life at a 19th century manorial estate. In Áshús there is a tea room and an exhibition depicting daily life in the early 20th century. In Gilsstofa you'll find the museum´s gift shop and information centre. The Sagas relate that Snorri Þorfinnsson, son of Þorfinnur karlsefni and Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir farmed at Glaumbær in the 11th century. He was born in the wilds of Vinland (North America).
