While they are aka Belladonna Lilies, they are not actual lilies but Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna). The stalks just shoot up mid-summer. We see a lot of them on the roadside north of here. They were a surprise when they appeared in the garden of our new place.
Consulting Wikipedia: you might be correct about the leaves, but we might have missed that stage.
