built in barnack stone in 1140, and despite a fire 60 years ago, a fairly complete example of a tower keep. only the battlements and fore building are missing.
pigeon infested keep maybe built by gundulf , similar to his tower at rochester, and known as st.leonard's tower. built of kentish rag, utilising a natural outcrop of stone that runs as a low cliff here, forming one side of the basement story. lacking excessive fenestration, it can never have been a very comfortable residence.
