restored royal arms of henry 7 over the main gate to the precincts. note the little beasties climbing the renaissance columnettes by the supporters of the shield. this gate dates from 1517-20, but was almost entirely restored in the 1930s.

one of the radiating chapels of the apse is st. anselm's chapel, with the crypt windows below, and the windows above replaced in 1336 by a grand decorated window, split cusps in the kentish style. the norman work is of anselm's time, being begun in 1096, consecrated in 1130, and best seen externally since the fire of 1174 gutted the church.

the corona at the east end of the church, 1182-4, work of william the englishman, which held a small shrine with part of becket's skull. a stair tower rises on the left, the corona itself is all window and buttress, little wall, all gothic.
