truncated east end of the church, with early c18 rusticated doorway in the blocking of the c14 arch from the south aisle into this space, once the site of transepts and crossing. the blocking of the main western crossing arch dates from 1953: on each side can be seen the great circular piers that supported the tower, from which sprang the smaller crossing arches with their own half piers.
