at the west end of the nave two bays of c.1140 have been cut about in the ?c14 when they were thinking of redoing the nave along the lines of such work at rochester or winchester, but ran into problems as the building began to collapse. perhaps this was what caused the necessity to remove both western towers and rebuild the west front .
