c.l. witteronge's dirce statue at tate britain, london

c.l. witteronge's dirce statue at tate britain, london
sir charles lawes-witteronge's 1906 bronze of the death of dirce, tied to the back of the farnese bull. this take on a famous classical group was given by the artist's wife, and may have been as much an embarassment then as now, and has always lived just outside the tate. it sexualises the violent death of a pulchritudinous woman , using art as a fig leaf for repressed edwardian desire .
