the chancel arch seems to be another case of saxxo-norman overlap, probably built by a saxon but after the conquest. the arch mouldings tie up with the responds, but neither bases nor capitals could have been built by a norman and are much more saxon in style, so much so that 1080 seems almost too late a date to me by maybe ten years, though sussex always was very conservative. seen beyond, the north arcade of the nave is late c12: the roundels of the clerestory are of un known date.
