bury st edmunds abbey, suffolk

bury st edmunds abbey, suffolk
detail of the west end of the abbey church built c.1140, the ruins full of c18 and c19 houses. the three big blocked arches were the facade of the westwork, with a big tower over the middle one, its n.w. stair turret sticking above the roofline. to north and south are the remains of two storeyed apsed chapels, with big octagonal corner towers completing the front of the church just out of shot.
