clutton built the church in 1859-60, with the lady chapel fitted around his apse c.1861-3, a piece of clever planning by his pupil j.f.bentley, who had been responsible for the supervision of the interior fittings of the original church under clutton, before striking out on his own when offered the job of extending the church. it seems odd that having completed the church in 1860, the patrons would then proceed to have the north wall of their chancel demolished with all of the mess that would be entailed, including having to redo a large chunk of the chancel vaulting, barely a year after completion, and one wonders how happy clutton would have been at this turn of events, losing the job to the pupil he'd put in charge.
