in the south east corner of the cloister stands the church of the benedictine nunnery, shorn of its aisles by the college founder c.1497, who wanted a bigger cloister. the cloister arcades were rebuilt by essex 1763, on the left can be seen the transept of c.1170, its original windows blocked, and new ones added c.1500 in it and the truncated nave. at the same time the upper tower was built .
