lutyens' classic subtle design of 1919-20, originally made up as a temporary structure of wood and plaster, but so popular that the portland stone rapidly replaced this. there are no verticals or horizontals, all of the lines curve, the seemingly horizontal around a centre point 900 foot below ground , whilst if the verticals were continued upwards they would all meet 1000 feet above.
