st.michael's church, bishops' stortford

st.michael's church, bishops' stortford
this rococo tombstone is that commemorating john guyner +1738. there are plenty of beautifully curvy topped c18 gravestones here, their silhouettes alone adding immeasurably to the experience of church and town, and showing up the philistinism of those who argue for clearance of graves in the name of economy or efficiency

nothing worse than a graveyard cleared of tombstones for the sake of tidiness or ease of mowing, or even because graves might be too reminiscent of mortality, all reasons I've been given for this philistine act. sometimes the graves are the best thing about the church, yet this branch of funereal sculpture is often overlooked.
