hackney churchyard, london
there are plenty of late c18/ early c19 table tombs in hackney's campo santo, including builders and protectors of empire; in these rows there are soldiers and sailors, merchants and civil servants; there is even one of the first governors of australia , as well as plenty of people who benefitted from the increased opportunities such an empire gave, not just to bigwigs but also to the ordinary man. of course, lots of people are remembered here who died there; an awful lot of people died in the empire or colonies, or even on the way there . the call of adventure and a better life was just as strong back then as it is for many immigrants today, sometimes, you just have to take risks.
