Whip Scorpion - Galkadawala

These are arachnids, related to scorpions, but without a nasty sting. They look pretty scary though. About 12cm long - they only come out after dark!

These were common (about 6cm long)

Assassin Bug - Galkadawala

14 Nov 2014 102
These feed on other insects, especially ants and termites. They sit around outside the ant/termite nest entrances and stab their prey with their proboscis, suck out the juice and then stick the carcase to their backs!

Galkadawala tank

14 Nov 2014 113
Tanks are artificial lakes where water is captured behind a barrage/dam during the wet season to use through the dry season. They are very important for wildlife too in Sri Lanka
