The SS Rotomahana is thought to be the first large merchant steamship to be built of steel. Built in 1879 by Denny W & Bros of Dumbarton, she was owned by the Union Steam Ship Co and was its first Trans-Tasman passenger ship. Quoted from the Heritage & Education website
