The Barras

The Barras
The Barras is a major street and indoor weekend market in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland. The term "barra" is Glaswegian dialect for "barrow", relating to the market's early years, where traders sold their wares from handcarts. Barrowland is sometimes used to describe the district itself where the market is located, which is actually officially known as Calton. Quoted from Wikipedia.

Remarkably similar sound to the Cockney pronunciation. Love the symmetry here.

Barras. My great aunt's married name. I had no idea it's origin was Scottish.
Love the shot, Joe!

I thought Barras as a surname derived from French. Thanks for your very kind comment, Andy. Cheers, Joe

I think the origin of this name is more likely to be French than Scots.

Good well framed shot Joe. Just reading the above comments; Surnames are so interesting. My maiden name was Dear, which has an interesting history. Not sure which version is correct though.
Cheers, Rosa.

Just looked it up, Rosa. There are lots explanations. My favourite is, " It was a name for a person who was a beloved person or as a term of endearment". Thanks for your very kind comment. Cheers, Joe

Glasgow is sometimes called the 'Dear Green Place'. Maybe it was named after you, Rosa. LOL. Cheers, Joe
