Yesterday the last commercial flight arrived and departed from Berlin Tegel Airport „Otto Lilienthal“. It is now officially closed after 70 years of service. The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport opened for commercial traffic on 31 October 2020 after 14 years of construction time. Tegel Airport was built in 1948 during the Berlin Airlift within 90 days as an Airfield.
Although change is inevitable and the noise reduction for the city will be immense this is also somehow sad. Tegel Airport is an essential part of Berlin's history and its identity. I loved to stand on the parking deck of a nearby shopping mall right in line with the runways watching planes and letting my mind wander.
