Travertines at Pamukkale, Turkey

Travertines at Pamukkale, Turkey
The water is pale blue in colour - the white pools reflecting the blue skies. It's also warm because it's from hot springs which bubble up at the top of the mountain. You can just see a line of people a third down on the left as they walk along a series of pools for a paddle. Just to give a sense of scale.

I thought I was looking at a part of Yellowstone National Park that I'd not seen. Didn't know there was anything like this in Turkey. Like the perspective and the inclusion of the people for scale. These are obviously much larger than one's first impression from the photo. The feeling of distance is nicely enhanced by the mist and mountains in the background and the point of view is perfect in that respect. Not much to find fault with in this photo.

I like the composition - particularly the uneven shape of the land surface and the pools. The depth of field is very good and knowing that the tiny line consists of people is fascinating. The crisp white clouds are very attractive. What an amazing scene!

This is a very difficult scene to shoot because of the vast difference in brightness. If you had lugged a tripod over this ground (and I certainly would not have been willing to do so), you could have bracketed several shots and combined them to bring out the details in the darker elements. A polarizer might have eliminated some of the haze, but it also might have had a negative impact on the glossy pools of water. There is also a slight blue grey tint to the photo which might be the ground color or it might be a camera effect of shooting a white scene. Like snow, sometimes a more accurate shot can be achieved by adding a stop to the exposure. I just suggest these because I saw this In My Opinion, but I think that that is a very fine shot as is.
