Dragonfly eating a butterfly
Called a dragonhunter, scientific name Hagenius brevistylus, this dragonfly is consuming a tiger swallowtail on my bird feeder pole in my garden in Etowah County, Alabama. I never realized dragonflies were capable of catching such large prey. I was absolutely amazed to see it fly up and land with its catch. Ran and got may camera, started shooting while trying to get closer. Finally spooked it. Thought that was the end of it, but after circling high up in the trees, it returned and came to rest on a hanging basket crook. Where I was able to get of a couple of more shots before it again took still carrying its prey and landed high in the trees. (IMG_3907)
