Spinalonga- Overlooking the Leper Graveyard
Scanned slide from 1999.
After the remaining Turks left Spinalonga Island in 1903 their houses were occupied by people suffering from leprosy. The island was close enought to the shore to be suppied with necessities while confining the lepers to this place. Spinalonga continued to serve as a leper colony until 1957, later becoming a major tourist attraction.
