I've not yet gotten off the boat and hiked on the island.

Yup! The dock is at the bottom of the Cleetwood Trail, the only access to the lake level. As you might expect, you have to sign up _way_ in advance, and the tours only run from about July 1st onward. Here's a pic of the boats:
