The diode is used to drop the voltage a bit. I could have used one with 0.5V, but this one was better than nothing. Ideally I would have needed a 3Ohm resistor - which I didn't have. 0.22Ohm would have been no problem... The 5 white LEDs are wired in series and the rectified voltage of the lamp is suitable for not overdriving them.
I probably should have built a constant current source, but I lack the proper resistor values... transistors: yes, useful low valued resistors: no. And yes, I know about wiring them up in parallel.
