During the late 1880s Cézanne painted several pictures of a road bordered with chestnut trees on his family's estate, the Jas de Bouffan. Visible at the right, the road led from the back of the house to the gardens. Near the rail dividing the two areas was a collecting pool and a washing trough (the low stone structures behind the trees).
