Ivory Plaque of God Creating the Animals in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, August 2007

Ivory Plaque of God Creating the Animals in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, August 2007
Ivory plaque with God Creating the Animals
From the Cathedral of Salerno, southern Italy
Carved about 1084 in Amalfi, southern Italy

Accession # 17.190.156

This plaque comes from a set of some fifty ivories showing scenes drawn from the Bible. Together they may have decorated a large piece of church furnishing, perhaps the enclosure before the altar.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
