Bow Brooch in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010

Bow Brooch in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010
Bow Brooch
Silver with gold-sheet overlay and garnets
East Germanic
Made 400-450

Accession # 47.100.19

This brooch is a luxury version of a kind worn by eastern Germanic women living along the Danube River in the 300s and 400s. It undoubtedly belonged to an aristocratic woman as part of a rich ensemble consisting of armlets, rings, and collars with pendants.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
